What to write: the quick version
- Congratulate them, using the baby’s name if you know it.
- Welcome the baby – a line to the little one is always sweet.
- Say something kind to the parents. They’re doing an extraordinary thing on no sleep.
- Offer help if you’re close by (food is always welcome).

What to avoid
- Birth-story questions in the card. If they want to share, they will.
- Comparing babies or offering parenting advice nobody asked for.
- “Enjoy it, it goes so fast!” True, but to someone awake since 4am it can sting. “Enjoy the cuddles” is kinder.
- Gendered assumptions if you’re not sure – “little one” works for everyone.
Help that actually helps
If you’re nearby, add a specific offer: “I’m bringing a shepherd’s pie on Friday – I’ll leave it on the step.” Or: “Happy to do a supermarket run any day this week.” New parents rarely ask, but they almost always say yes to dinner.
